Ellicott City Senior Inducted to Hall of Fame

The Lutheran Village at MILLER'S GRANT nominee Anne Nix recognized for exemplary service

Anne Nix of Ellicott City has been inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame on October 22. She was among 48 older adults in Maryland, and the only one in Howard County, inducted at Michael’s Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie.

Nix was nominated for her outstanding volunteerism in the community as well as with her soon-to-be home, The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT in Ellicott City.

She has been involved with her church, First Lutheran Evangelical Church in Ellicott City, for more than 50 years serving on a number of committees, the Pastoral Care Team and as council president; participating in the call of new pastors; and teaching Sunday school. Nix is also a Stephen Minister and Prayers for Healing Minister, who focuses on supporting women in crisis or experiencing some type of transition, and often leads or participates in Bible studies and prayer circles.

After selecting The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S GRANT to be her future home, Nix started a newsletter for fellow future residents of the community and began volunteering with events that bring future residents together including clubs, special events, and even the formal groundbreaking event.

Most recently, she learned of a need for volunteers at the Christian Services of Howard County Thrift Shop in Ellicott City. She serves there at least one day a week sorting and pricing clothing. Proceeds from the shop helps cover rent, utilities, food, special needs, etc. for those in need within that community.

“Anne is devoted to ensuring that a sense of community exists at MILLER’S GRANT even before the community itself does,” said President and CEO Geary Milliken. “She epitomizes the active, dedicated and philanthropic senior for whom the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame was initiated.”

Nix says she benefits from her volunteerism as much as the organizations that she supports. “It’s the joy that I get from it,” she said.

The Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame honors Maryland residents age 65 and over who are active volunteers and have made an outstanding contribution to improve the lives of others in their community.

The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S Grant, which is sponsored and operated by Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, is the first continuing care retirement community to be built in Howard County since 1990. It will allow adults ages 60 and better to transition seamlessly from independent living to in-home care, assisted living or skilled nursing as their health care needs change. The community will feature 241 apartments and single-family and duplex homes and a state-of-the-art care center all designed to evoke a sense of neighborhood. The care center will include 20 suites for assisted living and 12 skilled nursing beds. Occupancy is expected to begin in early 2016.
