Freddie Gray Proceedings to Begin

Six officers charged in death of Baltimore man will begin court proceedings in Baltimore City.

Proceedings for the six officers charged in the case of Freddie Gray are slated to begin next week, according to Maryland judicial officials.

Judge Barry G. Williams will hear pretrial motions Sept. 2 and Sept. 10 in Baltimore City Circuit Court. Both hearings will start at 9:30 a.m.

The hearings may cover whether the trial will be held in Baltimore and if the officers will have separate trials or be tried in groups, as State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby has requested, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Officer Caesar Goodson, Officer William Porter, Sgt. Alicia White, Lt. Brian Rice, Officer Garrett Miller and Officer Edward Nero were charged with various offenses, from false imprisonment to second-degree depraved heart murder, in connection with the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray.

Gray died in police custody April 19 from an injury to his spinal cord, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner told police.

Hours after Gray was laid to rest in Baltimore on April 27, riots broke out near Mondawmin Mall and in the area where he Gray arrested around North Avenue.

The hearings in Baltimore City Circuit Court are designed to lay out the process for trying the case. All six officers have waived their right to appear in the courtroom, The Baltimore Sun reported.
