Friends Boys Remain Unbeaten In MIAA B Conference With 17-4 Victory
Quakers to face top lacrosse contenders next week
Seven players lit the scoreboard for the Friends School boys lacrosse team on Friday in a 17-4 home win over Sts. Peter and Paul School.
The win lifts the Quakers to 11-0 in MIAA B conference play, and ensures that the team takes a two game lead into showdown contests next week against second-place teams Annapolis Area Christian and John Carroll, each of whom had two losses going into play on Friday.
“They’re great challenges,” Friends coach Jon Garman said of next week’s games. “This team has always responded to the challenges all year long, but these are two tough games on the road,” he said.
As for the 17-4 win over Sts. Peter and Paul, Garman was pleased with the Quakers play.
“Even though we let up a bit in the middle of the game, we generally showed good intensity, finished our shots, played together defensively. (We) did a lot of good things,” he said.
Jamie Batho led the way for Friends with five goals in the hard-hitting, physical contest that was marred by some questionable contact.
The Quakers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first seven and a half minutes on goals by Paul Orrson, Batho, Michael Sweet and Tucker Glotzbach. Peter McLaughlin took the face off following Friends fourth goal, raced up the field and scored the first Sabres goal at the 5:27 mark. Orrson scored his second of two goals to close the first quarter scoring with Friends ahead 5-1.
Friends opened the second quarter as it did the first, scoring the first four goals. Batho scored twice in the quarter, with Michael John and Jack Gibb each hitting the net once. Gibb doubled over in pain from an uncalled poke-check to the gut that came after his unassisted goal at the 4:03 mark. Sts. Peter and Paul’s Andy Dalbora tallied the final goal of the quarter, making the score 9-2 Friends at the half.
From that point forward, there was little doubt as to the outcome. The Eastern Shore school scored twice in the second quarter yet Friends responded with three of its own. The Sabres were unable to dent the net over the last 16 minutes of the game while Friends scored seven additional times over that time frame.
The 16th Quaker tally came during an extra man situation for Friends after a Sabres player was assessed a two minute penalty for unnecessary roughness for a late hit out of bounds. Gibb, who finished with three goals and an assist, exacted revenge from the second quarter cheap shot by scoring from the top of the crease, converting a feed from Dan Warren with two seconds left on the penalty.
In addition to Batho’s five goals and Gibb’s three, David Magdeburger scored three goals. Glotzbach finished with two goals and two assists, and Orrson with two goals. John assisted on the first goal of the game, before tallying his unassisted second quarter goal from 10 yards. Sweet’s score came on a quick stick from a feed from Glotzbach in the opening quarter. Warren assisted twice, with Connor Finn and Chris McClenney collecting one each.
