BALTIMORE, MD – Police killed a father-son duo in Baltimore Thursday who were wielding guns in broad daylight, according to Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis.

"We were in the right place at the right time, and I can't say enough about the bravery of these officers," Davis said. "We don't run from bad guys with guns."

Three special operations officers had been on patrol in the 400 block of East Lanvale Street Thursday afternoon when they saw two men get out of a vehicle holding guns, police reported.

Matthew Vincent Wood, 43, of the 700 block of Exeter Hall Avenue, had a Smith and Wesson rifle loaded to capacity and his son Kimani Michael Johnson, 18, of the 500 block of Craig Avenue, held a loaded Ruger 9 mm handgun, according to Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith.

Witnesses reportedly said Wood and Johnson had taken a "tactical" and "aggressive" stance toward their intended target(s) when the officers opened fire.

"There were people that they planned on shooting in broad daylight at 4 o'clock in the afternoon..." Smith said, noting children were on spring break from Baltimore City Public Schools.

Both Wood and Johnson had previously been charged with handgun violations, Davis said.

After two officers fired a total of 56 rounds, the two individuals were deceased and the threat neutralized, according to Davis.

One officer who fired is a two-year veteran and the other is an eight-year veteran and sergeant within the department, according to Davis, who said they would be identified Friday afternoon. They have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure following an officer-involved shooting.
