Hampden Lights Up for Holidays

Baltimore tradition continues with Miracle on 34th Street display.

Now that the “Miracle on 34th Street” display is live in Hampden, holidays have officially switched gears.

Homes on the block in north Baltimore officially illuminated Saturday night and lights will stay on for 24 hours during Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, according to WJZ.

The festive event was a little miracle in itself, after concerns about public safety threatened the annual tradition.

Earlier in the year, residents said crime in the area had “gotten out of hand” and they were thinking of not turning the holiday lights on unless the city intervened, according to WBAL.

There was not ever formal agreement from the entire block that the event would be in jeopardy, The Baltimore Sun reported, but police increased patrols and are also doing holiday details in the area.

The Miracle on 34th Street display runs through Jan. 2, 2015.

The 41st annual Mayor’s Christmas Parade in Medfield-Hampden is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7.
