John Magiros To Be "Dancing Star" at Alzheimer's Association Memory Ball Apr. 18

Premier Baltimore Event to Raise Funds for the Disease

BALTIMORE John Magiros believes in taking large strides outside of his comfort zone. Last year, he ran with the bulls. Now he’s getting ready to tackle another major challenge, on the dance floor.

The Morgan Stanley wealth planner will be one of 10 performing as a “Dancing Star” at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Memory Ball, Saturday, Apr. 18, from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel.

This premier Baltimore event – emceed by ABC2 News Anchor Jamie Costello – features cocktails, dinner and music by local band, Highway Star. The highlight is the dance competition to win the Judge’s Choice Trophy for best dance and the You’re Our Star Trophy based on “votes” tied to donations ($1 per vote online and at the event).

Magiros is lending his time and talent to the Alzheimer’s Association because he has seen the effects of Alzheimer’s, both personally and professionally.

“My grandfather had Alzheimer’s and it was something my mother had to deal with,” Magiros explained. “Through how she talks about it, I can see it has really affected her.”

“Since I’ve graduated college and begun working in financial planning, I have to make deep dives into our client’s lives and how they’ll be cared for in retirement,” he added. “Regardless of wealth, I’ve seen Alzheimer’s have huge impact on people’s lives. We have a large personal attachment in these scenarios and it’s not difficult to be bothered by the prevalence and effect of Alzheimer’s.

Magiros will perform a Cha Cha to “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson.

“Being out on a limb becomes background noise when you look at the growing number of people affected by Alzheimer’s and how money raised is being put to work in advancements of research, treatment, and a cure,” Magiros said. “I’m just part of the whole here, even if that part involves sweet dance moves. But the whole is working to help reclaim the future for millions.”

Event proceeds will fund supportive services of the Alzheimer’s Association and critical research for a cure. More than 5 million Americans are living with the disease, 97,000 in Maryland and every 67 seconds that number increases by one. Alzheimer’s is the only cause of death among the top 10 in America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Its mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Its vision is a world without Alzheimer’s®. Visit www.alz.org or call 800.272.3900.
