Keswick Announces Creation Of Center for Healthy Living
A 10,000-square-foot facility will offer health and wellness space for older adults in north Baltimore.

On Thursday, April 27, Keswick, the area’s premier health resource and provider of services for older adults, introduced plans for a new Center for Healthy Living at their Community Celebration. The Center for Healthy Living will be housed at the Bauernschmidt Building on Keswick’s campus, located in the Roland Park/Hampden area. The renovation of the building is currently in the design phase and will include more than 10,000 square feet of health and wellness space. The Bauernschmidt Building will also house some of Keswick’s administration.
With the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, Keswick is staying ahead of the curve with a focus on their role as a health resource for the community and expanding mission impact by delivering more services in more ways to impact the lives of more people. “Keswick has always focused on providing individualized, quality care to restore, renew and revitalize older adults through healthy living initiatives. After 130 years – 90 of those on our 40th street campus, we are now expanding the ways that we deliver healthy living support to older adults through expanded community health services. Connecting older adults to the many ways they can get and stay fit, remain motivated and live healthy lives in their own homes and in their local community is central to the Keswick philosophy,” said James Seba, Chair, Keswick Board of Directors.
Maryland ranks 20th in the nation for individuals over the age of 65 according to estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau. And the Maryland Department of Aging reports that individuals over the age of 85 are the fastest growing segment of the population, growing in number statewide from 66,902 in 2000 to 165,293 in the next 17 years. Unless there is specific attention and intervention, with the growing number of older adults will come increased levels of chronic illness, disability and possible dislocation from home. Keswick strives to make it possible for older Maryland’s residents to meet their health goals and live their best lives by creating a seamless transition from illness to wellness, with a focus on education, engagement, support and prevention not just disease treatment.

“Keswick’s tag line ‘Right Care…Right Time…Right Place’ is indicative of our desire to meet the needs and wants of older adults by providing options regarding their health, services and treatments. Creating a Center for Healthy Living is the logical next step,” said Carmel Roques, Keswick President & CEO. Keswick’s Center for Healthy Living will offer programming including socialization, education, arts, lifelong learning, exercise, and information on chronic disease and care management for both Keswick residents and the community. “These initiatives focus on health and wellness to help older adults stay in their home longer and continue doing the things they love,” said Roques.
With the renovation of the Bauernschmidt Building, Keswick will seek best practices from innovators in the design industry and across multiple sectors—converging senior living healthcare, hospitality, and higher education. The design will support diverse markets, evolving programs and interests, and technological advances.
