MARYLAND DLLR SECRETARY KELLY SCHULZ VISITS BERRY PLASTICS FACILITY IN BALTIMORE

Schulz offered private tour of plastic packaging facility in Baltimore following success of Berry Plastics, MD MEP boot camp

On Tuesday, August 25, Maryland Secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR) Kelly Schulz, toured Berry Plastics Corporation’s manufacturing facility at Holabird Business Park in Baltimore, Md.

Through the DLLR’s Employment Advancement Right Now (EARN) program, Berry Plastics and the Maryland Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MD MEP) partnered in 2014 to create MD MEP’s first full-length manufacturing boot camp for various Baltimore-based manufacturers. The boot camp offered unemployed and under-employed job candidates an intensive six-week program designed to equip participants with a mix of life, job and manufacturing skills. As a result of the boot camp program, a pool of well-trained, employable workers were prepared to enter the manufacturing industry.

Separately, DLLR’s EARN program recently granted Berry Plastics funding to create the Maryland Advanced Manufacturing Plastics Partnership, a training collaboration that adopts advanced manufacturing’s technological strides in plastics processing to train current employees for career advancements and unemployed workers for entry-level positions.

“We’re thrilled to be able to show Secretary Schulz the fruits of a partnership between Berry Plastics and MD MEP that would not have been possible without the help of the DLLR and Maryland’s EARN program,” said Brian Sweeney, executive director of MD MEP. “It is through collaborative efforts and strategic partnerships like these that we hope to grow manufacturing and increase the quality of the workforce in the Maryland.”
