Police Shoot Man Wielding Knives on Sidewalk: Reports

Images of the encounter were captured on one officer's body camera, say Baltimore police.

BALTIMORE, MD — The city's police commissioner said Friday that a man wielding knives on a city street was shot by officers after he refused to drop the weapons, according to media reports.

The unidentified man was in critical condition in a local hospital, Commissioner Kevin Davis said at a news conference Friday morning.

The incident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. on a sidewalk in the 3300 block of Greenmount Avenue near East 33rd Street, according to media reports. The police said the man had been threatening people at a nearby bus stop.

Davis said three police officers responded to the scene and ordered the man to drop the knives, but he refused, WBAL-TV 11 News reported. The officers then used a stun gun to try to subdue him, but it had no effect.

Two officers then fired their pistols at the man, and he was hit several times, the Baltimore Sun reported. The officers rendered first aid to the man before he was taken to the hospital, the commissioner said.
