Scam Alert: Baltimore County Police Say Beware Certain 'Workers'

Criminals are targeting older adults in local communities, according to the Baltimore County Police Department.

People posing as utility workers have been targeting older adults in Baltimore County, according to police.

The suspects say they need to check water or pipes and might claim they need to conduct an inspection, identifying themselves as employees of Baltimore County, BGE or the water department, according to a report from the Baltimore County Police Department. Police said that some suspects wore bright yellow traffic vests and presented badges.

One suspect distracts the resident, and another enters the home and takes money, jewelry and other valuables, according to the report.

Police provided the following guidelines to prevent these “deception burglaries,” and said to report any suspicious activity to 911:

  • Keep doors locked when you are outside the house.
  • Don’t let in repair workers you weren’t expecting, particularly if they want to fix something that hasn’t been a problem.
  • Ask for identification and contact the person’s company before allowing the worker inside.
  • Call 911 immediately if someone comes to your home in a deception burglary attempt.
  • Write down a description of the individuals and their vehicle, including a tag number, if you see these criminals.
  • Stay in touch with older neighbors, particularly ones living alone, who may be targeted.
