Tom Matte & Sylvia Mackey Appearing at Sports Head Injuries & Dementia Panel Discussion, June 9 at UMBC

Educational event to coincide with Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

TIMONIUM Md. With a growing link between traumatic brain injury and the development of dementia – especially in the world of professional sports, the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Maryland Chapter will host a special panel discussion on the effects of head injuries on the brain.

Dementia, Head Injuries & Headlines: Perspectives and Research will take place Thursday June 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Proscenium Theater at UMBC (Performing Arts & Humanities Building-Room 103, 1000 Hilltop Circle, 21250) in Catonsville.

Moderated by Sportscaster and 105.7 the Fan Talk Show Host Scott Garceau, this event will explore brain injuries and the subsequent development of dementia among middle-aged or older adults. Panelists will include the following advocates and/or caregivers:

· Dr. Nicole Absar (Medical Director, Senator William & Ellen Proxmire Memory Clinic, Integrace Institute at Copper Ridge),

· Sylvia Mackey (Advocate and widow of former Baltimore Colt John Mackey),

· Tom Matte (Former Baltimore Colts Running Back), and

· Dr. Eleanor Perfetto (Patient Advocate and widow of former NFL player Ralph R. Wenzel).

Co-hosted by UMBC Management of Aging Services and Integrace Institute at Copper Ridge, the panel is one of several June events planned by the Alzheimer’s Association in observance of National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

In addition to receiving proclamations from various elected officials, the Association will hold an Alzheimer’s Awareness Night with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards - June 12, Brainstorm: Concert for The Longest Day - June 12 at the Canton Waterfront Park, and a half-day mini-conference for caregivers - June 22 at the Orleans Street Library, among others.
