What does it look like where WAVEscape will happen 6pm to 10 pm Friday July 26 at Montpelier Street & 30th Street Park, affectionately called “the Field” and proudly recognized as the largest green open space inside all of the Better Waverly neighborhood?
Here are a few images of the little known space owned by Baltimore City Department of Recreation & Parks and tenderly cared for by the residents of the blocks around it, as well as what Matthews Street, Ellerslie Avenue and Montpelier Street look like nearby.
There is a growing list of performers and artists coming to WAVEscape, which include Barrage Band and Her Fantastic Cats, Hidden Clearing Books, 901 Arts, Gavin Heck’s cicada-inspired electronic sounds, Sonja Merchant singing jazz, acro yoga with Asa Keiswetter , Tonika Garibaldi photography, human/doggy grooming/glamor by Myloh "Bones" Jackson, jewelry/artwork sold by Morgan Phillips, Nayeli Garcia-Mowbray, Detria Adams, local vendors with delicious foods and short films.
If the Waverlies have a reputation for attracting artists, one of its first and certainly most renowned was Lizette Woodworth Reese which is why I have decided to assemble a display devoted to her poetry and prose and place in our village history. As a give-away item, I am handing out copies of one of my favorite poems by her called “TO-DAY” which ends with these lines:
Each day is but a pool within the grass,
A haunted, gusty thing,
Of ancient fashioning,
Where earth and heaven do meet as in a glass.
Stop by WAVEscape. Bring an appetite and a little cash.
It is a happening for folks of all ages and dogs are welcome, too.
Park along the 800 block of Montpelier and enter the Field through alleyways on the south side of the street at either end of the block.
