Bites Nearby: Jed's Shaved Ice

A small family enterprise just for the summer heat

You cannot drive the back roads of Potomac and not be curious about Jed’s Shaved Ice Shed at the corner of Glen and Travilah Road.

Understandably, given the seasonal nature of shaved ice demand, the shed is boarded up most of the year. The summer months are its call to duty.

Jed’s Shaved Ice is the brainchild of North Potomac resident, Jed Jaffe, whose son Logan now spends a good bit of his summer break helping out at the stand.

Who knew there could even be 20 flavors of shaved ice? Root beer, pineapple, orange, red raspberry, banana, lemon, sour apple, vanilla, chocolate, mango—to name a few.

There is even a sugar free diet watermelon flavor.

What are the customer favorites?  Without hesitation, the response is Tiger’s Blood…a combination of strawberry and coconut. “Perhaps it is just the name,” Logan surmises, “but, all the blue ones are also very popular like blue raspberry and blue Hawaii.”

A medium shaved ice is $2.50, a large is $3.

A lucky few will win a free shaved ice by lining up behind the painted rock and taking a shot at the nerf basketball hoop attached to the side of the shed. A gimmick, maybe, but the kids love it…and they will keep coming back to try again.

Logan Jaffe enjoys his summer vocation minding the store and refers to the shed now as the “flagship location.”

Jed’s Shaved Ice is expanding with a new location in the parking lot next to Safeway on Darnestown Road in North Potomac, with younger brother Dylan minding the store.

With summer’s temperatures off the charts, this is indeed a good time to expand the enterprise… bringing cool refreshing shaved ice to the masses…or at least to the Potomac and North Potomac area.

Jed’s Shaved Ice is located at the corner of Travilah and Glen Road in Potomac, near the Potomac Oak Center. Summer hours are 12:30 - 7 p.m.
