Health Connection: Chiropractic

Going from rock ‘n’ roll musician to doctor of chiropractic does not seem like a logical career path, but in the case of Dr. Spiro Theodore at Potomac Valley Chiropractic, it made perfect sense.

At the age of 30, Dr. Theodore was working as a musician and songwriter. Things were not progressing as he had hoped. He knew not only that he needed a change, but that he wanted to do something with his hands.

Suffering from low back pain himself, he got a great deal of pain relief from regular visits to a chiropractor. Thinking that he, too, would like to heal with his hands, Dr. Theodore decided to go back to school and start out on a new path to become a chiropractor.

“It’s all about prevention,” said Dr. Theodore, “it isn’t about the pain, but keeping you out of pain.”

Every day activity, sports, exercise and injury are all things that put pressure on the nervous system. By relieving this pressure the body can heal itself, and thereby prevent the need for medications and, in some cases, even surgery.

“Your body is controlled by the nervous system,” he explains, “and a chiropractor treats the nervous system.”

Dr. Theodore believes strongly that good use of chiropractic therapies can help people live healthier, longer lives with more energy and less pain.

Looking back, this Wootton High School graduate thinks maybe it was not such a stretch that he became a health practitioner. His grandfather was a doctor, his dad a research scientist and he loves helping and healing people.

When asked what he would like people to know about him, he smiles broadly, “I have a great family, a wonderful wife, and I love my work.”

Both his mother and his wife work in the office with him at Potomac Valley Chiropractic at 12105 Darnestown Road.

Then he adds, “And I still play my guitar!”
