Travilah and Shady Grove Roads to Be Upgraded

Parts of two local roads to be improved through funding provided by Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Two local roads will soon receive facelifts.

A press release sent on Tuesday announced that the Montgomery County Department of Transportation will be using a portion of the $15.4 million it received from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to upgrade parts of Shady Grove and Travilah Roads.

More than 10 lane miles of Shady Grove Road, from I-270 to Darnestown Road, and more than five lane miles of Travilah Road, from Dufief Road to River Road, will be upgraded, Montgomery County spokesperson Esther Bowring wrote in the press release.

The road work will include removing and replacing defective curbs, gutters and sidewalks and replacing pavement and line markings. The projects should be completed by Fall 2011, Bowring wrote in the release.

Travilah and Shady Grove Roads were two of the seven roadways that the Division of Highway Services designated as high priority projects under its inventory of countywide roadway conditions, Bowring wrote.

Montgomery County Department of Transportation allocated $6.7 million of the total American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to the Division of Highway Services for the roadwork projects.

The Division of Transit Services received nearly $7 million of the funds, which it used to purchase 12 energy efficient, diesel-electric hybrids, one clean diesel bus and new dispatch software.

The remaining $1.75 million went to the Division of Traffic Engineering, which is using the funds to upgrade guardrails, install backup power unites for traffic signals, upgrade traffic warning signs and install streetlights on Route 124.
