Severe Weather Prompts Ground Stop, Delay At MD Airport

A ground stop was issued for BWI Marshall Airport as severe weather moved into the region.

ODENTON, MD — Severe weather moving through the region on Wednesday prompted a ground stop and delays at BWI Marshall Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at BWI Marshall Airport shortly after 4 p.m. due to thunderstorms moving into the region.

The stop remains in effect until 6:15 p.m., with a chance for an extension.

Much of the state remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m.

Similar orders were issued to the two other major airports in the D.C. area. Ground stops were issued for Dulles International and Reagan National airports until 6:15 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

Ahead of the incoming band of storms, forecasters warned that much of the state would see heavy downpours and strong wind gusts. Large hail was also anticipated.

The storms moved into the area on a cold front, breaking a three-day heat wave that caused temperatures to soar into the mid-90s.

Rainy conditions are expected to stick around through Memorial Day weekend.
