ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Starting in July, a costly $84 million rehabilitation project will close BWI Marshall Airport's longest commercial runway for months.
The temporary closure will impact runway 10-28, which officials said will undergo milling and repaving. Electrical work will also be carried out to ensure the tarmac is fitted with modern LED lighting.
Work on runway 10-28 will run through at least Oct. 8.
But that's not all. Authorities also announced that temporary paving work would prompt overnight closures for runway 15R-33L.
The construction would overlap with the work being carried out on runway 10-28, as paving efforts are scheduled between Aug. 4 and Oct. 7.
"With this major project, we are enhancing Maryland’s gateway and improving the heart of BWI Marshall Airport," said Shannetta Griffin, executive director/CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration.
"This runway rehabilitation project will help ensure the long-term safety, reliability and operational efficiency of the airport."
BWI Marshall Airport, which provides flights for nearly 70,000 passengers on average, is not expected to see serious disruptions to its services during the construction work.
A release issued by airport authorities said the Maryland Aviation Administration would take measures to "minimize disruptions to airport operations or the customer experience."
However, authorities said "residents may notice a change in airline flight patterns near BWI Marshall Airport."
Work on runway 10-28 is scheduled to officially get started on July 22.
