Arson Fire Damages Severn Home, Suspect Assaults Resident: Police

An arson fire caused the ceiling to collapse in a Severn home, injuring the suspect. A resident was assaulted by the suspect, police said.

SEVERN, MD — An elderly resident was assaulted by a man who barricaded himself in a Severn home and started a fire Monday night, Anne Arundel County Police said.

Officers were called to a disturbance about 6:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Gambrills Road, where the suspect destroyed property. He ran into an open attic access, where he barricaded himself inside when police arrived.

The suspect talked with officers until smoke was seen coming from the roof and attic of the home. As the fire spread, the man appeared in the opening of the attic, and the ceiling collapsed, causing the suspect to fall.

Officers removed the man from the house and he was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The elderly victim assaulted by the suspect was also treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
