Benoit Won't Run For Congress

County Councilman Jamie Benoit (D-4th District) announced that he will not run for Congress, citing a desire to continue working on behalf of Anne Arundel County. 

The Crownsville resident, who represents Odenton and Gambrills on the county council, had expressed an interest in pursuing the Democratic nomination for the newly drawn 4th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. But he said Monday night that he will instead serve out the remaining two years on his council term.

“Given the uncertainty and turmoil that currently exists in the county, I know I can best serve Anne Arundel County by remaining on the Council,” he said in a press release. “Now more than ever, our community needs stability and experienced leadership. So I am staying put.”

Benoit said he’d like to work toward helping the county capitalize on the growth at Fort Meade, while strengthening schools and find ways to boost the local economy.

Benoit spent about a month exploring a Congressional run. He eyed the seat currently held by Donna Edwards, a Democrat from Fort Washington. The Congressional 4th District was redrawn recently to include portions of Anne Arundel County.

An Arundel High graduate and former Army officer, Benoit was first elected to the County Council in 2006 and was re-elected in 2010.

"I look forward to working with the Council, business and civic leaders, and members of our community as I re-dedicate myself to working for the good of our County,” he said.

In a conversation with Patch last month, Benoit also indicated that family matters would play a role in his decision. He said his wife, Kari, supported his interest in a Congressional run, but he noted that she is expecting their third child. Benoit also said he would have to take into account the time commitment of serving in Washington, as he works as the CEO of Federal Data Systems, an IT company.
