Berger Cookies. Seriously? Yup, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set their sights on shutting down the Baltimore icon. What’s next, the Domino Sugar sign? Don’t laugh. It could be. After their plan to eliminate trans fat, would anyone be surprised if the FDA moved on to sugar and salt? If it weren’t for the efforts of governmental agencies like the FDA, of course, we’d all be dead!
There seems to be little question that trans fat is bad for our diets. How about Chinese food and MSG (monosodium glutamate)? Sausages (sodium nitrate)? Sports drinks (brominated vegitable oil)? There is no question that salt and sugar are bad for us, as well as a multitude of other foods and additives that we eat. Does that mean that the United States Government needs to make every decision on what we eat?
How about light bulbs? I am sick of the Government-sponsored effort to move me from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Don’t even get me started on the plethora of “regulations” enacted under the Obamacare legislation! Seriously, do I need sex reassignment surgery (SRS) in my health insurance? Apparently, the United States Health and Human Services (HHS) seems to think so – and they want ME to pay for the “insurance,” even if I am not interested.

Quite simply, government is regulating our lives more today than ever before. We are slowly, but surely, losing our freedom. If you ask me, our alphabet federal agencies are out of control. Nearly every product that touches our table, including organic products, is regulated by the government. Any product that we plug into an outlet is regulated by the federal government. Amounts we must pay employees are regulated by the federal (and state) government. I can’t bring toothpaste on an airplane if the tube is over three ounces thanks to FAA and TSA.
We didn’t elect any of these people who are making decisions on our day-to-day lives.

If I sound like a tea party member, I am not (yet!); but I am sick and tired of everyday Americans being controlled by bloated, expensive, do-gooder federal and state governments. They are out of control. In the words of Lord Acton, “[p]ower corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.” You don’t have to read Animal Farm by George Orwell to understand that this is exactly what is happening in Washington DC and many state capitols around the United States.
This corruption includes, yet even goes beyond, our elected leaders. Yes, the President can shift focus on priorities, but the vast bureaucracy is only interested in more power – and its own survival. The current administration has been more than a willing participant to advance and expand the scope of the Federal bureaucracy. Until we reverse this trend, I believe that we will continue to see high unemployment levels, high government dependency, lowering standards of living, and lowering of the esteem of this great country across the globe.
