Balancing Act

Thinking about what we want in 2012.

It's New Year's Eve and I'm sitting on the couch watching my kid play a game on the Wii. I have a cold and I can't wait to go to bed. It's an exciting life I lead, you don't have to tell me. But honestly, I'm fine with it. I've never been a big fan of New Year's Eve. There's always so much pressure to go to some fancy party and stay up until midnight. And let's face it, once you have kids, you're happy to stay up past nine. I could have had people over here, but after hosting Christmas and then being gone for the week visiting family, I just didn't have it in me. I'm tired. I gave 2011 all I had and I need to rest up for what 2012 has in store. I see posts and pictures on Facebook of families celebrating and ringing in the New Year and they make me feel inadequate. Why couldn't I get my act together? I'm my own worst enemy. I know this.

I don't like to make resolutions because I'm afraid I won't keep them. And if I do make them and break them, it's devastating. So what do I want out of 2012? I good friend of mine wrote a blog post earlier about how she wanted to slow down in 2012. I'm totally on board with that. I want to enjoy my life, my kids and my work rather than be burdened by them. I want to "be in the moment" when I play with my girls and not check Facebook. I'd love to sit and watch a movie with my husband rather than sit at my desk and do work at night. But here's the thing: it's not my reality. At least not now. However I can probably try and be more (fill in the blank) in 2012. But what goes in (the blank?)

I'm not a huge fan of the word "content" It sounds as if you're not interested in what's coming next. I think the word "blessed" is incredibly overused, but I understand why people use it. And "grateful" just sounds like we think we don't deserve all of the great things that happen in our lives. Instead, I'll try and look for and create more "balance" in my life. I like that word – balance. It allows some wiggle room. It let's you have the best of both worlds.
