Blog: Old Mill Success Proves Gym Class Still Belongs in Schools

A local politico discusses his pride for the Old Mil Patriots and how it's evidence that schools should never think about removing gym class from their schedules.

On Friday at 7:30 p.m. at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the Old Mill Patriots will be looking to take their second football 4A state championship in 3 years. It makes a guy like me happy as I am an alumnus of ’91 from Old Mill High.

I’m also am happy as I was an assistant coach on the 2001 65 pound Rivera Beach Buccaneers. On that team I coached Deonte Shields, the current starting QB for the Old Mill Patriots. How can one not be proud?

What am I doing writing about football in a political blog spot? My reason is, I keep seeing these “Keep Gym in School” ads on TV and hear them on the radio. Are you kidding me? I mean, really?

Some school boards around the country have taken gym out of schools or are thinking about taking gym out of schools? This makes me sick to the stomach to think of just that happening. Anyone who thinks this is a good idea ought not to be sitting on a school board in America. If so, we have a good place for you to make up silly rules on: the moon.

You can make all the rules you want up there by yourself. I sure in the heck hope this never comes up in the state of Maryland!

Anyhow, let me give kudos to my team, the Old Mill Patriots!! Even if the school took the gun off the mascot, I wish them the best on Friday night.

Win or lose, I’m sure they will give their best effort to bring the trophy back to the Old Mill High School family!!
