Diet is a Bad Word!

Another four-letter word that should be added to the "not allowed to say" list.

I think that one of the reasons people aren't successful in their efforts to lose weight is because they are going about it the wrong way.
Dieting is not the answer.

At least, not dieting in the sense that we have heard–and so many have done–over decades.

When you hear "I am on a diet", what do you think?  Usually that can be translated to "I eat nothing but rabbit food (salad) and drink water."  Well, duh. That does not sound appealing at all, and therefore, why would anyone want to do that?

Furthermore, if you ARE able to do that, how long will you last before you cave and eat the entire bread basket instead of the salad, and you wash it down with an entire bottle of wine?

Diet can be interchanged with "deprive" too often. And, deprivation leads to overindulgence and frankly, a whole lot of resentment.

My personal motto has always been "moderation, not deprivation". (You might recall I have talked about moderation before. )

You don't want to diet. You want to  change your habits AND your attitude. Although not necessarily by definition, a diet is something seen as a temporary solution to a long time situation.  The effects are going to be just as temporary.

However, if you change your lifestyle, and you make changes that are easy and that you can live with, they will be long lasting, as will the results.

Let's face it. Being around someone who is "on a diet" is not always fun.  However, being around someone who is making smart choices that are easy to live with and that have an impact, well, it's kind of cool. Being around that person just might rub off on you, and even if you aren't trying to lose weight, you just might pick up a few good habits, that, no matter whether or not you are trying to drop a few pounds, can be very healthy habits to have.

So, when you are teaching your kids all the four letter words that are not allowed to be spoken, you might consider adding D-I-E-T to that list.
