Entering the World of Team Sports

I am becoming a football mom, and I think I like it!

By now you are probably well aware that I am a tad of a fitness fanatic. That being said, it does NOT necessarily mean I am knowledgable about or love all sports, specifically team sports. These are two very different things.

I have managed to get this far without having a reason to embrace or learn about football, but for the 1st time, this year my son is playing for GORC. Up until now the only football players I could name for you are those who have appeared on Dancing With the Stars (Emmitt Smith and Hines Ward were both favorites of mine :)  Well, now....I have entered the realm of "football mom."
Heaven help me :)

I have been attending as many practices as my schedule allows and have been making friends with the other mothers who have been beyond helpful in "schooling" me on what I am watching :)

I am in awe of the vast amount of knowledge and enthusiasm these mothers have for the sport. I have been advised that I will gain a bit of both over time, regardless of whether or not I want to :)

And, for as much as I joke about it, I find that I really am enjoying learning about football.

As someone who has always worked out individually and never participated in team sports, I am enjoying this opportunity to see "how the other half lives." I can see why so many people find being part of a team to be a source of motivation and incentive to "up their game."

I find that I don't necessarily need (or want) the pressure of teammates having their success be dependant on mine to keep me focused and giving 110 percent when I workout, however, I am seeing how it can be incredibly helpful and a great incentive for someone who might not be a self-motivator.

Now, I do NOT mean to say that those who play team sports aren't self motivators. What I AM saying is that when you are a team player you will get additional motivation from your teammates and knowing that it is a group effort.

It doesn't matter what you enjoy doing; running alone or throwing the ball to a teammate. If it gets you excite and makes you want to lace up your shoes and work up a sweat, than it's a wonderful thing.
