BLOG POST: I Support Same-Sex Marriage

My take on the same-sex marriage debate.

As , Maryland’s long-awaited same-sex marriage bill is on its way to the governor for signature. Of course, no mention of same-sex anything can be made without the religious and other “sanctity of marriage” folks voicing their closed-minded opinions against it. Marriage is a union of two loving, consenting adults. It’s as simple as that. Same sex, different sex, who cares? Let people live their lives and enjoy the freedoms that America should protect and extend to all citizens.

If you are one of those who oppose same-sex marriage, give me one example of how a same-sex married couple down the street really affects your life. I don’t want to hear anything about God, religion, or that Bible thing. Opposition really just boils down to religious and denied homophobic fears.

Some will claim same-sex marriage will destroy the institution of marriage. Obviously these people haven’t looked around at the state of marriage in general. We different-sex-marriage people can’t get it right and have done more than enough to ruin marriage on our own. Others will claim that kids need to be raised in a healthy, traditional family to do well. How many of us grew up in a healthy house, where the marriage of our parents was so strong and such a great example of how we should live?

Same-sex couples deserve the right to enjoy all the social, financial, and legal rights as anyone else. Plus, they should get to enjoy some of the following:

  • Fighting over which in-laws are more annoying
  • Helping each other make up excuses to skip out on those lame, Hallmark holidays (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas)
  • Flipping a coin over who gets to buy the first new car as a married couple
  • Lying to such questions as: “Do I look fat in this?”, “When was the last time you showered?”
  • Silently hoping for sex while trying to remember the last time it happened
  • Thumb-wrestling to decide who has to get up and take the first shower.

Before you ask, yes, I’m a divorced Atheist who very much hates forced family obligations such as holidays. But the church would rather see me get married again than two loving same-sex people. Does that make sense?
