Odenton Elementary School and Veterans Day

Odenton Elementary School honors our service members abroad on Veterans day with some good, old-fashioned caring!

My daughter attends Odenton Elementary School and I am continually impressed with their civic attachment to our community and the greater good. So I shouldn't have been surprised when I opened my daughters weekly parental correspondence folder to find a celebration and honoring of Veterans Day.

I have to admit, I don't give much thought to Veterans Day even though I know that I should.  It is one of those holidays that is strategically placed right around my youngest daughter's birthday and Thanksgiving, so I am generally wildly distracted.

I found myself impressed after reading a take home piece about honoring our Veterans.  The elementary school is collecting items that our soliders overseas ask for and need the most to send in a care package to them. The kids are being asked to wear red, white and blue ribbons and donate a dollar on Friday to help pay for the shipping of the care packages to our soldiers.

I think it is great that elementary-aged children are learning not about war, why we are in it, who believes in why we are occupying foreign lands and when we can expect withdrawal, but that regardless of any of the bigger political and emotional questions that we ask ourself there remains the truth of the matter: our service people are away from home, in foreign lands and serving their country. And recognizing that elementary school children can honor their service and perhaps provide just a little bit of comfort.

Everyone likes to get a package!  A few snacks and treats can lift your spirtis and make your day just a little easier to get through. Best of all, our service people will get some hand-drawn and colored letters that, at the base, come with the simple concept of taking care of another human being!

Thank you Odenton Elementary School for teaching our children to be a caring member of the community!

Update: We've attached a photo of one of the students in action. Morgan Macon is a student at Odenton Elementary. Her father, Mike, is a veteran and the two worked together to help collect items for the troops last week.
