Slice of Life

If your life were a pie, what would you fill it with?

So I’m back from my photography conference in Vegas and I had an incredible time. I learned so much about the business of photography, posing, lighting, everything. On my last day there I went to an 8 a.m. class to listen to photographer and motivational speaker Me Ra Koh talk about using social media to promote your business. She talked about Facebook, blogging, Twitter, even Pinterest (follow my boards here and I’ll follow you back!). Me Ra spoke about what is “noise” and what is meaningful when it comes to social media.

The most interesting part of her talk came when she asked us to draw a circle on a piece of paper and said, “This circle is a pie and your pie is your life. You can only slice it so many times. What makes sense for you?”

It got to me to thinking about how I spend my time and is it the best for me, for my family, for my business. If you look at the picture, you can see the crude pie chart that represents my life. Half my time is spent with my family. The remaining fifty percent is divided almost evenly between my photography business, my social media work and personal time including time with friends.

That seems about right for someone with small children. I stay home with my kids, but I also work quite a bit. I’m trying to build a business and help grow another one. Somewhere in there I manage to get some time to myself and see my friends. This is my reality. When my pie is sliced I’ve got one huge, sweet juicy piece that is filled with the loves of my life—my husband and kids. The other is filled with my talent, my passion, my enthusiasm and my dreams. I can’t imagine slicing the pieces any smaller.

So draw your own pie and think about how you’d slice it. It doesn’t have to be a dessert pie. It could be a pizza. Or even a quiche! It’s your pie. It’s your life. I just hope you like the way it tastes.
