Traffic Sucks, But You Don't Have To

My list of ways you can help to make the roads a little better.

There has been a lot of talk on Patch about traffic patterns and issues on the roads. This is just my list of ways you can help to make the roads a little better.

1. While driving, focus on actually driving. Do your make-up and/or shave before you leave the house. Don't fiddle with electronics or try to read at stop lights. Put down the phone. None of this is more important than driving.

2. Pay attention. You might be a good driver, but others around you won't be. Be aware of the traffic around you. Be prepared to take defensive action if they do something stupid.

3. Read the signs. Traffic patterns change. Read traffic signs to make sure you are aware of things like lane closures, right or left turn only lanes, exit lanes, upcoming construction, etc. Make sure you are where you need to be to get where you need to go.

4. Know the rules of the road. Be aware of who has the right of way. Be aware that a broken traffic light becomes a four way stop.

5. Be courteous. Don't speed up to keep others from merging. If you have a free lane, move over to make merging easier. If you are merging, don't use the shoulder to go past the line of cars merging to gain an extra car length.

6. Relax. I am someone who struggles with getting angry behind the wheel. I am one who needs to remember that nothing that happens on the road is worth doing something that may escalate the situation into a violent confrontation.

7. Slow down. This is another one where I need to practice what I preach. Unless you have a medical emergency, there is no need to drive at excessive speeds. Slow down and enjoy the ride.

Thanks for reading and happy driving.
