Back in January I brought to you a story about a young man fighting a rare immune disease. I thought I would let everyone know about Jackon's progress over the past 4 months. This disease is known to many as XLP. The only cure for this disease is a bone marrow transplant. Thanks to everyone's assistance by joining the bone marrow registry, a donor was found to help Jackson. On March 14th at Johns Hopkins hospital Jackson went under a Haplo transplant. A Halo transplant is known as a blood stem cell transplant. Jackson's dad was his donor.
Since March 14th it has not been easy on Baby Jackson. Jackson ended up in the PICU for 2 weeks and was on a ventilator. He was diagnosed with Veno Occlusive Disease (VOD) which is a possible complication of the transplant. He is being fed through a temporary feeding tube and will have surgery on May 8th for a more permanent feeding tube. Jackon is now on +51 post transplant and has been admitted at Johns Hopkins since February 19th.
Jackson might need to undergo one more transplant before everything is completely over. This donation is knwon as a donor lymphocyte boost. Donor lymphocyte boost is where lymphocytes from a bone marrow donor are infused in person who recieved the bone marrow transplant. The donation will also put him at an increased risk of graft vs host disease.
