WATCH: Celebrating Usain Bolt and Jamaica in Odenton
Odenton's Caribbean shop took Monday afternoon to rejoice in independence and footspeed.
A day after Jamaica's Usain Bolt solidified his status as the fastest man on earth, people from his home island nation celebrated his Olympic 100-meter victory as well as the 50th anniversary of their independence as a country.
The in Odenton had a celebration Monday, with free jerk chicken and other goodies on hand, plus caribbean music blaring from the store onto the sidewalk along Annapolis Road.
I spent some time chatting with shop owner Charisse Bembrey, a Jamaica native who was bouncing with national pride. She served up some rice and peas with spicy curry, and tended to a big chicken out on the grill out front. She pointed me to some jars of jerk sauce and calypso chutney, which I'm going to have to test out in an upcoming dinner.

Four years ago, Bembrey was in Jamaica to celebrate Bolt's three gold medals at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Now she is here in Odenton, but said she has been following all of the Jamaican sprinters including Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price, who won the womens' 100 meters.
"It's just like four years ago...they come back and are spectacular again this year," she said. "Go Team Jamaica!"
