Checking Out Firehouse Subs

The new sandwich shop opened in the Village at Waugh Chapel, and Patch stopped by for lunch.

While getting a few last-minute Valentine's Day gifts Monday afternoon, I decided to stop by the new Firehouse Subs shop at the Village at Waugh Chapel.

The restaurant officially opened for business over the weekend, and has received some good reviews from folks on the Odenton Patch Facebook page.

The sub shop was decked out with a firehouse theme, with firefighting equipment and decor on the walls.

Firehouse Subs was doing a good business at about 3 p.m. Monday, and franchise owner Justin Stephens was on hand helping with orders.

I asked the friendly cashier, Taylor, what she recommended. She said the most popular sandwich has been the "Hook & Ladder," featuring smoked turkey breast, honey ham and Monterey Jack cheese.

It's normally served "fully involved," meaning that it has an array of toppings including mayonnaise, mustard, lettuce and tomato. I passed on the mayo.

The 8-inch sandwich by itself cost about $6 and left me full. I doubt this will be the only time I'll eat there.

Firehouse Subs has 475 locations nationwide, and was founded by firefighters Robin and Chris Sorenson. This is the first franchise in Anne Arundel County and the third in Maryland.

Firehouse Subs is located at 2622 Brandermill Blvd., Gambrills. 410-721-3500.

The shop is open from 10:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
