Code Ninjas Coming To Hanover
Code Ninjas teaches kids ages five to 14 how to code and create videogames. It will open Feb. 1 in Hanover.
HANOVER, MD — Kids who love the intricate details behind video games can learn more about computer coding and creating video games at Code Ninjas, a learning center that will open Feb. 1 at 7550 Teague Rd., Suite 113.
The Arundel Mills Hanover location is owned and operated by local entrepreneurs Tom McCormick and his wife Tu Nguyen. Originally from Vietnam, Nguyen came to the U.S. in 1991 and received her master’s degree in math and computer science from John Hopkins University. McCormick attended New York University to pursue his bachelor’s degree in computer science. Together, McCormick and Nguyen have more than 30 years of experience in the software development industry. They understand the value of STEM education and realized the need for it at a young age, which led them to finding Code Ninjas. Instantly, they knew it would be a great fit in the Arundel Mills Hanover community. This is their first location, with plans to open a second in Fulton.
“Our son loved every session he went to at Code Ninjas,” said McCormick in a statement. “He’s not only learning how to code, but also being taught life skills like collaboration and problem-solving skills, and he has a blast doing it. We are excited to open a new location because we’re able to provide this same opportunity for the kids in the Arundel Mills Hanover Community.”
Kids ages five to 14 can learn how to code using Code Ninja's game-based curriculum made up of nine belts, just like martial arts. The curriculum is self-paced, but not self-taught; kids get immediate help and encouragement from Code Senseis and fellow students as they advance from white to black belt. The program keeps kids motivated with little wins along the way, and “Belt-Up” celebrations where they receive color-coded wristbands to mark their graduation to the next level. By the time a child finishes the program, they will publish an app in an app store.
Code Ninjas Arundel Mills Hanover will hold a grand opening celebration Feb. 22. Attendees can enjoy a variety of STEM related games and activities, raffles, giveaways and light refreshments.
