Fort Meade Environmental Board Adds Two Members

The board charged with overseeing environmental clean-up at Fort Meade

The Fort Meade Restoration Advisory Board voted Thursday to add two new community members to its ranks.

The RAB, as it is commonly called, voted in Crofton resident Tim Berkoff and Kurt Riegle of Annapolis during its bi-monthly meeting.

Berkoff, who works as a atmospheric researcher at UMBC, is also the zoning and environmental chair for the community group Crofton First. Riegle is a past president of the Severn River Association, and is director of environmental technology with the U.S. Navy.

Fort Meade officials are expected to review the two applications, but they could be formally approved in time for the next RAB meeting on Sep. 15.

The RAB meets once every other month to receive updates on the remediation of environmental problems stemming from Fort Meade. The most common topic of discussion has been chemical plumes spreading from contaminated sites on base and into groundwater in the Odenton area.

Current board members are scheduled to receive a tour of the largest contaminated sites on Saturday.
