Fort Meade Set to Haul Off 13,000 Tons of Trash

Excavation of the former Manor View dumpsite will start on Feb. 13. The waste will be trucked to Virginia.

Fort Meade is scheduled to excavate a portion of the former Manor View dump site on Feb. 13, with plans to haul away about 13,000 tons of waste to a landfill in Virginia.

Army contractor from the 70-year-old dump that has been blamed for creating methane gas at levels deemed to be unsafe.

Tom Crone of Arcadis, a consultant to the Army, said his company will test samples from the dump this month to ensure it meets the requirements of the Virginia landfill.

By the first week of February, the company will begin preparing the dump for excavation, and trash removal will immediately follow, Crone said.

The excavation process will take about six weeks and restoring soil to the dump will take an additional five weeks.

Crone provided the schedule for excavation at a meeting of the Fort Meade Restoration Advisory Board on Thursday night.

Fort Meade officials said they continue to monitor methane levels in the area and that at last check, there were no abnormal readings outside the dump perimeter.
