Fort Meade to Celebrate Army's Birthday

The United States Army will turn 237 on Thursday. Here's what the installation has planned.

Fort Meade has scheduled a variety of events to celebrate the 237th birthday of the United States Army on Thursday. 

Here's a look at some key events on the day, which is also Flag Day.

Army Birthday/Flag Day Breakfast

The Francis Scott Key Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army will host the breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Club Meade. Scott Sheads, a historian and ranger at Fort McHenry, will be the speaker. Tickets cost $10. For more information, call retired Sgt. Maj. Jim Gilbert at 301-677- 4864.

Cake Cutting and Displays at Columbia Mall

Installation Commander Col. Edward Rothstein will celebrate with Hoard County Executive Ken Ullman at 10 a.m. at the mall. There will be a cake cutting and special family events in front of the Lord & Taylor store.

Celebration With Kids

Rothstein will also cut some cake and visit with children from the Child Development Center III at 3 p.m. Thursday. For more information call Tracy Love at 301-677-1530.

Youth and Teen Barbecue

At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the youth and teen center will host a barbecue for kids in grades six through 12. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, cake and games. Guests are permitted at a cost of $2.

Bowie Baysox Celebration

On Friday, the Baysox will host the Fort Meade community at their game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Free tickets are available at the Leisure Travel Service, 2300 Wilson St. on Fort Meade.

Members of the Army will throw out the first pitch and perform the Star Spangled Banner, and some future soldiers will be sworn into the Army.
