Girl Scouts Camp in the Rain
From October 10th through 12th the Girl Scouts of SU37 that include troops from Odenton, Severn and Gambrills had their annual Community Encampment at Camp Woodlands in Annapolis. The girls did not allow the rain to stop them from having a great time and enjoying their weekend. All 110 Girl Scouts canoed, climbed a rock wall, learned fire building skills, made fire starters, made crafts and hiked. Troop 401 from Odenton was the host troop and selected a 70’s theme for the event. The girls made pet rocks, flower headbands, tissue paper flowers and glass jars lanterns. After dinner the girls gathered around the campfire for S’mores and then each troop preformed a skit.
As part of her Ambassador Journey, Emily Tudor selected to make someone’s dream come true. Her little sister, Abbey Tudor has dreamed of becoming a Girl Scout for as long as she could remember. She had watched her sister go to meetings, Girl Scout camp, events and participate in community service projects for years. This year Abbey is in kindergarten at Jessup Elementary School and is now a Daisy Girl Scout. Emily was determined to make this encampment very special for her little sister. During some of the day’s events, Abbey was paired up with troop 807 so she would be with girls her age while Emily helped run some of the day’s activities. Emily checked in on Abbey throughout the day to make sure Abbey was having a great Girl Scout experience. As a senior at Meade High School, Emily has a very busy schedule that includes honors, AP and college level classes and is also working toward her Girl Scout Gold Award. She always makes time for her family, especially her little sister who idolizes her. Emily is a wonderful mentor for Abbey and did make her dream of attending a weekend encampment come true.

The Community Encampment is a huge event and could not be possible without several volunteers and committee members. This year the committee included some fresh faces that brought new and exciting ideas to the table. Kendall McElwee, Morgan Miller and Sarah Price from Odenton Troop 401 as well as Shelby Cannan, a Juliette and in the 10th grade at Arundel High School, spent the past 5 months helping the committee plan, shop, cook and organize the weekend long event. Tracy Cannan, the committee chairperson said “They all have different ideas, skills and opinions but together truly love Girl Scouts. They have all attended encampments since they were Daisies and had wonderful ideas that made the event work. I really believe their contribution to the event made this an exceptional encampment.” The committee also collected food for the CAP Pantry and school supplies that were donated to Odenton Elementary School.
