IRS Revokes Tax-Exempt Status of 17 Groups in Odenton, Gambrills

Groups including the Kiwanis Club of Odenton and the Ark and Dove School of Music lose their status after failing to file necessary paperwork.

The Internal Revenue Service has revoked the tax-exempt status from 17 organizations in Odenton and Gambrills, as part of a nationwide push to clean up its nonprofit database.

The IRS said that in most cases, organizations did not file paperwork because they are now defunct. But interviews with affected local groups suggest that organizations were tripped up by filing requirements that were not in place prior to 2007.

Nonprofits must file materials with the IRS each year in order to stay compliant. Those who didn't file for three years in a row had their nonprofit status automatically revoked.

Charles G. Gunter, a board member with the Kiwanis Club of Odenton, said the group failed to submit Form 990-N, also known as the “e-postcard.” He said the group was in the process of submitting paperwork to ensure the tax-exempt status is installed retroactively.

Joe McCartan, another Kiwanis board member, said he hoped the status would be restored because the group relies on it to save money on community awards, including the medals recently provided to students for

“We need to get on top of that,” he said.

The IRS issued guidance on how small organizations can easily have their status reinstated retroactively by paying $100 instead of the usual fee of $400 or $850.
