Local Churches Offer Special Services for Easter

Local Christian churches of all denominations offer worshipers a variety this Easter season.

With Good Friday only a day away and Easter approaching this weekend, several local churches are offering Good Friday services in addition to those traditionally offered on Easter morning.

Severn Covenant Church is comprised of worshipers from various Christian denominations. A Good Friday service will be held starting at 7:00 p.m. Friday April 22. Visitors and church members are invited to come listen to selections from the Bible, commentary and have Communion.

On Sunday morning, a light breakfast will be served at 9:00 a.m. followed by an Easter service at 10:00. Pastor Jack Cox will speak about the importance of Easter and the resurrection in the lives of Christians.

The  upholds the traditional values of the United Methodist churches nationwide.  They offer Bible studies and mission work. Their slogan is “A Beacon of God’s Love.”

Visitors and church members can attend a Good Friday service from noon to 3:00, titled “The Seven Last Words of Christ” based on the final words of Jesus Christ. It will consist of seven speakers, each assigned one word from the last words spoken by Jesus. After each speaker a choir will perform a musical number.

Easter Sunday will have a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. consisting of a short sermon, singing and testimonies. Another service will be offered later that morning at 9:00.

 focuses on the value of people and is passionate about reaching out to the community. It is a non-denominational church that offers a vibrant youth ministry.

Easter services will be Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. An evening service is also available at 6:30 p.m. Pastor David Frye’s sermon is titled ‘If Christ is not raised’ and focuses on the importance of the resurrection. 

 has been offering various ministry opportunities and activities to the Severn community for over 25 years. The non-denominational church proudly holds Spanish speaking services in one of its halls.

Good Friday services will be held at 7:00 at 8146 Quarterfield Road. The evening sermon will consist of worshipers nailing pieces of paper with their sins written on them to a cross. The papers will then be burned during Sunday morning services. The activity is a reminder of what Good Friday is about and what Jesus Christ did for mankind.

On Saturday, children of all ages can come to the Easter Egg Scramble where 8,000 candy filled eggs will be hidden in the parking lot. The Scramble starts at 11:00.

Pastor Steve Hall will give the Easter morning sermon. Services are at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. in a separate hall for Spanish speakers. Pastor Steve will explain Easter using a Rubik’s cube and white board.

has been actively serving the Severn area since 1952. Its new building has large open areas for church held events. The Baptist church has 10 staff members and ministries ranging from pre-Kindergarten to senior citizen groups.

Easter services will be Sunday at 8:00, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. consisting of music, a teaching video, a live painter on stage incorporating the Easter sermon into the painting and Communion. Pastor Dr. Drew Shofner‘s sermon is titled “When love comes to life.”

, though fairly new to Severn, focuses on the surrounding community. The congregation is in the process of growing in numbers and in ways to impact the community. It offers Sunday sermons online so those who can’t make it to the morning services can still hear the pastor’s words.

Good Friday services will start at 7:00 p.m. Reverend Bill Doerfel will speak on Jesus’ prayer on the cross and preach from Psalms 22 verses 1-21.

Easter morning services will start at 10:30 a.m. Pastor David Wayne’s sermon is titled “His resurrection and ours" and will also speak on Revelation 1:17-18. For those interested in hearing the sermon online, it will be available after 10:30 a.m.
