Local Live Music Guide

Looking to escape to a local spot this weekend? Here's what's happening in the local music scene.

If you can get away from the Christmas rush for a time this weekend, stop by some local spots for a beer or two and some good music. There's jazz, country and rock on the agenda both Friday and Saturday.

  • Dr. Phil Butts and the Sunset Band will be at Friday performing some great jazz classics and originals. We’re happy to see Butts has been keeping busy since his retirement from ’s music department in 2010.
  • On Saturday, Perry’s patrons will hear music from Beltsville-based High Test. The band boasts of a great mix of rock and classic rock. You can hear a sample of the band’s music on its MySpace Page, where members describe their sound as “like a muscle car on steroids."
  • On Friday at , singer/songwriter Kieran Lally will perform. He’s a common face at bars and clubs throughout the region. Here’s a clip of Kieran Lally on percussion with Jeff Bradbury at Kaufmann’s in May of 2010.
  • Mike Butler will perform at Kaufmann’s on Saturday, bringing his locally themed country music to town. Here’s Butler’s music video for his song "Charm City," (featuring some great shots of Baltimore), and check out this video for "Choptank River Boys."
