Most Local Legislators Voted Against Gambling Bill

For the most part, state legislators representing the Odenton and Severn area voted against a bill that would expand gambling operations in the state, though some lawmakers supported it.

By an unofficial vote of 71 to 58 in the House and 32 to 14 in the Senate, Maryland's General Assembly in Prince George's County. It would also allow for live table games at all casinos in the state. The issue will appear before voters on the ballot in November.

There was unified opposition from legislators in District 33A, with "nay" votes from Sen. Ed Reilly (R-Crofton) and delegates Cathy Vitale (R-Severna Park) and Tony McConkey (R-Severna Park).

In District 32, Sen. Ed Degrange (D-Glen Burnie) voted against the bill, along with delegates Ted Sophocleus (D-Linthicum) and Pam Beidle (D-Linthicum.) Delegate Mary Ann Love (D-Glen Burnie) voted in favor of the expanded gambling measure.

Lawmakers from District 21, which includes portions of Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties, were more supportive. Sen. Jim Rosapepe (D-College Park) and delegates Ben Barnes (D-College Park) and Barbara Frush (D-Beltsville) voted in favor of the bill, while Delegate Joseline Pena-Melnyk (D-College Park) voted against it.
