Let me explain - whether I'm posting on Google+ Local, my website, a press release or guest posting on a blog my picture shows up next to the post in Google's search engine results.
How do I do it? I use Google Authorship. I connect my website with my Google+ account and Google "recognizes" me as the author and posts my picture next to the search engine result.
There's not a lot of people using Google Authorship at the moment, but people are more likely to click a search engine result with a picture than one without one.
