Owner Cited in Case of Dogs Chasing, Mauling Deer Inside Middle School

The owner of two dogs that chased deer into Southern Middle School – where the deer were mauled, resulting in classes being canceled for the day – has been cited.

Alice McCormick of Solomons Island Road in Lothian was issued 11 civil citations, including creating a threat to public safety and letting the dogs run at large, CapitalGazette.com reports.

Classes were canceled at the Lothian middle school March 10 after a German shepherd and a black Lab mix chased three deer into the building, mauling the deer so severely that they were euthanized.

Damage to the school was estimated at $3,000 to $5,000, a school spokesman said. 

Anne Arundel County Police called to the school on the report of an alarm found a front door with a broken glass and chairs knocked over inside the lobby. Officers then came across deer inside the building being attacked by the dogs.

Animal Control Officers eventually captured both dogs, and the animals were confined by the county until March 18, when they were returned to McCormick, the website says.

One deer died from its injuries and another was euthanized because it was so badly injured.
