Piney Orchard Gets Set for Street Festival

UPDATE (12:26 p.m.)—Thousands of people will make the stroll along Stream Valley Drive on Saturday as Piney Orchard hosts its third annual street festival.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and feature more than 80 vendors along with live music, food and activities. 

Stream Valley Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic from the community center to Strawberry Lake Way.

Co-organizer Peg Waters said the number of vendors is nearly double that of last year. The street festival first started in 2010 as a celebration of Piney Orchard's 20th anniversary.

"It started out as a birthday party and all of the sudden it just blew up," Waters said."We've doubled in size and we're still self-sustaining."

Major sponsors include Brinkman, Continental Pools, Giant Foods and Broadstripe.

Food vendors will include Perry's, Bruster's Ice Cream, Expressway Pit Beef, Capitol Kettle Korn, among others.

There will be a moon bounce and two rock climbing walls, among other activities for kids.

From noon to 3 p.m., Looney Tunes characters from Six Flags America will be on hand to help promote the Maryland Running Festival.

Three bands are scheduled to perform, including the Chesapeake Steel Drum Band, Sunset Band and Arundel High School jazz ensemble.

There will also be an appearance from the color guard from Navy Informations Operations Command Maryland, and the unit's choir will perform.

Visitors are encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk to the festival. Also, there are no pets permitted.
