POCA Board Approves New Classes, Offers Roundabout Update

The Board of Directors of the Piney Orchard Community Association updated residents on a wide array of matters Monday night, including new classes in the community center and repairs to the roundabout monument.

After a , the board told residents that there would be another slight delay in completion of repairs to the monument on the traffic circle on Piney Orchard Parkway.  Piney Orchard’s property management company said that while landscaping work is nearly done, masonry work will be held up for a few more days because the brick has not yet been delivered.

The roundabout monument was heavily damaged in February after a young woman smashed through it with her car.

The POCA board said it expects to receive full reimbursement of the cost of construction from GEICO, the driver’s insurance company.  

The board also Monday said that the transition to a new property management company was going smoothly, with Community Management Corporation scheduled to take over on August 1. The board said CMC had already hired the senior staff that would work in the community and is in the process of hiring support staff.

Also Monday, the board approved two classes to be held in the Piney Orchard Community Center’s multipurpose room. A Zumba class will be held on Monday nights at 6 p.m. for residents at a cost of $3.50 per class. The board also approved theater classes for children to begin in the fall.

Board members Kelly Bowlus and Susan Swank voted against the classes, citing their lack of comfort with the board’s policy regarding rent-free usage of the community center.

Board President Jeff Andrade said he supported the current policy, but would be open to hearing proposals on how it could be improved.

Finally, the board voted to allow the Piranhas Swim Team to use the Island Pool for its end-of–year banquet on August 2.
