Retro-Rockets, Marilyn Monroe Top Senior Center Events
Here's a look at what the O'Malley Senior Activity Center has in store for September.

The following list of events was submitted by Mary Felter, public information officer for the Arundel County Department of Aging and Disabilities.
• The Retro-Rockets Band will perform from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Sept. 4, with lunch served at 11:30 a.m. that day. Band members include Dave Armbruster on bass, Glen Bullion on vocals and guitar, Iris Hirsh on vocals, Dave Kroup on keyboards, Larry McCoy on sax, and Bob Jones on drums. They will return to the golden age when smooth harmonies, gentle melodies, and catchy rhythms were the order of the day.
• Various trips are planned during September, include one to the casino in Harrington, DE, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 4. Senior center membership is required. The fee buffet, valued at $16.95, is offered, as well as $15 free play. Sign up at the office. Day trips locally include a trip to Target in Gambrills from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 7 with sign up required. Another trip is to Osaka Grill at 11 a.m. Sept. 10. Depart by county vans and enjoy lunch buffet style at the new eatery in Crofton. Sign up is required.

• Ryan Helfenbein, columnist for OutLook by the Bay and a representative of Lasting Tributes Funeral Care, will present “Ask the Undertaker: Unique Undertakings” at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 5 at the center. Today’s art of undertaking has modernized available options to include jewelry products, financial guidance, eco-friendly burial options, veterans’ benefit coordinators and catering service. A question-answer period is included.
• September movies are shown on Fridays starting Sept. 7 at 12:30 p.m. by volunteer Mary Markuski. The films include “Marilyn,” a three part mini-series “Rosemary and Thyme,” and another series called “Case Histories.”

• Instructor Mei Yu Green will teach student traditional Chinese brush painting and help them practice brush strokes to create botanical designs. No prior experience is required for the workshop offered from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 11 and 18. Supplies can be purchased from Hobby Lobby or Art Things.
• Sept. 12 is the last day for paper registration at the senior center for classes offered in the fall by Anne Arundel Community College.
• “Learn How To Manage Your Diabetes” is a free six-week class offered from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 2, 9, 16, and 23. Participants are to attend all six classes. • Susan Brown, instructor, will teach a Shamballa bracelet class from 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 19 and 26 in the O’Malley Annex. The $25 fee includes supplies. Payment is required at time of registration.
• A floor cloth painting workshop with instructor Marion Adams will be taught at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 in the O’Malley Annex. Sign-up is required along with a nominal fee.
• Advance registration is required for the AARP Driver Safety course offered from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28. Seniors can learn how to drive defensively, deal with aggressive drivers and adjust to hearing and vision loss. The fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Only checks will be taken.
