Staff Shortages Force Closure of Mapes Gate

The gate will close indefinitely starting on Monday, July 29.

Fort Meade announced that it will close the Mapes Road gate to all traffic beginning next week, citing a staffing shortage.

"Rather," officials wrote in a press release, "the closure results from an inability to maintain security staffing levels high enough to provide coverage for all of the installation’s access control points."

Installation Commander Col. Edward Rothstein said there could be delays at the other four gate on base, but that "based on our current number of security guards this is the best decision to ensure our safety.”
