2 Dogs at Reisterstown Shelter Seek Adoption After Hurricane Matthew

Baltimore Humane Society hopes to find homes, help caring for pets from North Carolina.

REISTERSTOWN, MD — The Baltimore Humane Society has taken in four dogs from a North Carolina shelter to help animals displaced by Hurricane Matthew.

Rylan, Sanford, Dawn and Shiloh were living in the Columbus County Animal Shelter before the storm hit in early October, and they recently arrived in Maryland with aid from other no-kill organizations.

North Carolina-based Brother Wolf Animal Rescue coordinated with nonprofit Pilots N Paws to transport the four dogs on Oct. 15.

By moving north, the dogs — who range from 8 months to 3 years old — helped free up room for pets who had been separated from their owners during Hurricane Matthew and needed a place to stay.

The pooches who traveled to Baltimore County are among more than 100 pets the two groups have paired up to transport to no-kill shelters, according to a statement from the Baltimore Humane Society.

"Because of shelters like Baltimore Humane Society taking dogs who were occupying those shelters prior to the hurricane, there is now room for the pets who were victims of the storm," the statement said. "So in a sense, those dogs that came north have helped rescue their fellow canine victims."

Two of the four dogs have been or are being adopted, while Rylan and Sanford are still looking for their new homes, Wendy Goldband of the Baltimore Humane Society told Patch Thursday.

These are the four dogs who arrived from North Carolina:

Rylan is a 2-year-old hound/terrier.

Sanford, a 3-year-old German shepherd, needs treatment for heartworm and is seeking a quiet foster home while being treated.

The Baltimore Humane Society is asking for donations to help pay for Sanford’s treatment and the care of the other dogs. To donate or for more information, visit Bmorehumane.org.

Dawn and Shiloh are 8-month-old hound/beagle mixes who have been or are in the process of being adopted.
