Ambulance Crash: Pedestrian Remains Critical, Officials Say

A pedestrian was hit by a medic vehicle Wednesday night near Owings Mills, authorities said.

BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — A pedestrian was hit by an ambulance near Owings Mills Wednesday night, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. The victim was in critical but stable condition when he was flown to the hospital, authorities reported.

The 33-year-old man remained in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Thursday, Dec. 13, according to public safety officials.

The crash occurred when the ambulance was returning to the Garrison firehouse after taking someone to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. It did not have its sirens activated and was not in emergency mode when the pedestrian was hit on northbound Reisterstown Road before the McDonogh Road intersection at 8:24 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, fire officials said.

After investigating, the Baltimore County Police Crash Team reported that the man was crossing Reisterstown Road using the northbound lane and was not in the crosswalk.

There were two first responders aboard the ambulance — an EMT who had been driving as well as a paramedic —and they immediately got out and rendered aid after the crash. Neither person from the ambulance was injured. They called for additional assistance, including the police department and medevac, officials said.

The pedestrian had critical injuries, authorities reported. He was airlifted to shock trauma by a medevac, which WJZ said landed at the McDonogh School.

There is a support team for emergency personnel who handle traumatic incidents, and its members were called to respond as well, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department.

“We’re in the business of saving lives, so to be involved in something like this is an extremely stressful event,” Baltimore County Fire Department spokeswoman Elise Armacost said.
