Baltimore NFL Star Dies at 39: Reports

​Keion Carpenter, who grew up in Baltimore, collapsed on a trip in Miami, officials reported.

Retired NFL player and Woodlawn High School alumnus Keion Carpenter died Thursday at the age of 39.

He collapsed during a family vacation in Miami, then fell into a coma, according to a statement from his family obtained by Fox 45. He was reportedly pronounced deceased at 6:47 a.m. Thursday at Jackson South Community Hospital.

Carpenter had been playing with his son when he hit his head and then collapsed, sources said.

The football player got his start at Woodlawn High School, where former coach Brian Scriven told Fox 45 Carpenter was known for his vision "to make other people's lives better."

After graduating from Woodlawn in 1995 and playing for Virginia Tech, he went on to play as a safety for the Atlanta Falcons and Buffalo Bills. In 2005, he founded Carpenter House, a nonprofit to help low-income families with activities like camp.

Carpenter is survived by wife, Tonia, and four children, US Weekly reports.
