Celebrate Strings

String Festival this Thursday at Franklin High

This Thursday, May 12th, marks the umpteenth annual Franklin Area Celebrate Strings festival. In terms of musical growth in the Reisterstown Area, one needs to look no further than this event.

Celebrate Strings began in the '90s to promote string players in the area. My first one, in 1997, had about 60 musicians from a couple local elementary schools, the middle school, and the high school. Now, we have 60 string players at the high school alone and at this week's concert, there will be over 100 elementary school students from 5 local schools and right around 100 middle school students.

Every year, the logistics of putting together the rehearsal and show make me wonder if it is all worth it. Then, at some point during the morning rehearsal (when all those kids descend on the high school auditorium to learn their music), one of the 5th graders tells me how this is one of the best days they ever had...and that's it, I'm back in for another year!

So, if you are intrigued by the prospect of 200+ string players (about 100 at one time for the big finale) then come on over to the Franklin High School auditorium at 7 p.m. on Thursday night!
